Fair Auto Appraisals / Case Studies

Actual Appraisal Results

These are real total loss cases I’ve handled, showing the insurance company’s original valuation, the final agreed or awarded Actual Cash Value, and the difference between the two. I’ve also included a closer look at five cases to explain the valuation disputes, the market evidence I presented, and how each case was resolved.

01 / The numbers

17 cases. Original offer vs. final ACV.

Different vehicles, insurers and outcomes. These are selected examples, not an average result or a prediction of what another claim will produce.

02 / Behind the valuations

Here’s what we were actually arguing about.

The final number is important, but it doesn’t explain the work. These five files show where the appraisers disagreed, what evidence was on the table, and how each case really ended.

CASE FILE / 01Negotiated agreement

2003 Dodge Ram 2500 ST, 5.9L Cummins 4WD

A $2,100 prior-damage deduction deserved a closer look.

INSURER ACV$9,032
FINAL ACV$27,033
INCREASE+$18,001

The issue

The insurer’s report included a $2,100 deduction for unrelated prior damage. I requested the supporting repair estimate so that deduction could be evaluated rather than simply accepted.

What we disagreed about

The other side also challenged the truck’s cab configuration. With older diesel pickups, the actual configuration matters, and the comparables need to account for it.

How it ended

The appraisers negotiated an agreed ACV of $27,033, an $18,001 increase over the insurer’s original $9,032 valuation. The file records a 19-day resolution.

CASE FILE / 02Negotiated agreement

2019 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4WD

Two better comparables helped move a stalled negotiation.

INSURER ACV$30,303
FINAL ACV$36,000
INCREASE+$5,697

Where things stood

The insurer’s appraiser had increased his valuation to $34,500, but we still had a difference of opinion about the vehicle’s market value.

What changed

I found two additional comparable 4Runners advertised in the low-$37,000 range and brought that market evidence back into the discussion.

How it ended

We reached a negotiated ACV of $36,000, $5,697 above the insurer’s original figure. The case took approximately six weeks.

CASE FILE / 03Negotiated agreement

1986 BMW 528e

The odometer was wrong by nearly 30,000 miles.

INSURER ACV$11,000
FINAL ACV$15,000
INCREASE+$4,000

What happened

Allstate’s original valuation contained a mileage discrepancy of nearly 30,000 miles. Even after that was corrected, the revised offer of $11,754 remained well below what the market evidence supported.

My evidence

I reviewed comparable vehicles and the owner’s maintenance records, including cooling-system, timing-belt, brake, fuel, and ignition work. A closely configured 1984 BMW 528e with similar mileage was advertised at $15,495.

How it ended

The insurer’s appraiser initially valued the BMW at $12,455.41. After further discussion, we agreed on $15,000. The increase shown here is measured against the reported initial $11,000 valuation, not the later revised offer.

INSURER: Allstate

CASE FILE / 04Negotiated agreement

2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 S

A C63 S with $26,000 in factory options is not just another C63.

INSURER ACV$28,287
FINAL ACV$35,539.29
INCREASE+$7,252.29

What I found

The subject had unusually extensive factory equipment, including carbon-ceramic brakes, AMG Performance Seats, and carbon-fiber options. I tracked the equipment differences using window stickers for the comparable vehicles.

Where we disagreed

The insurer’s appraiser used a mileage adjustment of $0.04 per mile. Reference values I reviewed indicated materially larger mileage effects, and his dealer comparables alone supported a higher number than his blended conclusion.

How it ended

After multiple exchanges, the insurer’s appraiser increased his valuation from $33,965 to $35,539.29, where we ultimately reached an agreement.

CASE FILE / 05Umpire decision

2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S

A flat 30% deduction isn’t the same as studying the branded-title market.

INSURER ACV$14,190.60
FINAL ACV$17,735
INCREASE+$3,544.40

The issue

The opposing appraiser started with clean-title vehicles and applied a flat 30% deduction for the Jeep’s branded title. One comparable also had a V6 instead of the subject’s 2.0L turbo four-cylinder.

My approach

I used actual branded-title comparables rather than assuming every branded-title Jeep loses the same percentage of value. We located another branded-title listing during negotiations.

How it ended

The insurer’s appraiser maintained a value of $16,500. We presented our market evidence to an independent umpire, who ultimately established the vehicle’s ACV at $17,735, an increase of $3,544.40 over Progressive’s original valuation.

Have a valuation you don’t trust?

Send it to me. I’ll tell you what I think.

I’ll review your vehicle and the market before I recommend doing anything. Sometimes there’s a good case for the appraisal clause. Sometimes the insurer’s offer is already reasonable. I’ll tell you either way.

Past results are case-specific and do not guarantee a similar outcome. Final ACV is not necessarily the amount paid after policy limits, fees, taxes or deductibles. An independent appraisal is an opinion of value based on the available evidence; other appraisers or an umpire may reach a different conclusion.
